Hardstyle partners in crime: Audiotricz

DJ duos; the hardstyle scene is full of it. But how is it really to be part of such a duo? Could it be that one is functioning as a dj and the other as a producer? How does this collaboration work in practice? What are the positives sides of working like this? Are there perhaps also downsides to it? Are those working as a duo friends with each other or do they see themselves as colleagues? It’s time to find out! This week we have a talk with: Audiotricz.

“We are Léon and Kenneth, originating from Nunspeet and we both decided to come together to produce by the name of ‘Audiotricz’. We have already known each other ever since we were little kids which is mainly because Nunspeet is quite a small village in which everyone knows each other.” In this period of time both gentlemen were already active in the music industry yet in two different kinds of music. “It took some time before we really started to come together to make tracks together under a collective name, but after that things really started to speed up!”

“During the summer of 2012, in August, we decided to join forces to conquer the hardstyle scene together. The reason for this is quite simple: we came along really well with each other and complemented each other perfectly. This provided us with a great boost to keep on going. In a short amount of time we managed to create a large amount of music which is something that we could not have accomplished if we had worked separately.”

Kenneth en Léon have always been interested in music. “We are both always busy with music, in the past as well as in the future.” Léon was more focussed at producing music whereas Kenneth was mainly focussed at playing behind the decks. In fact they have never thought about going solo which shows how much their collaboration means to them. “We do have our moments of course, those moments in which you don’t want to see each other for a while yet that is also part of the job.”

At times Léon can be quite chaotic and Kenneth is quite structured in terms of working. Léon is really a perfectionist - this is really an upside for working together. Kenneth however is someone who takes the initiative to say whenever something is good enough. “In most aspects of working together we are plus and minus, opposites you could say. This is one of the things that makes working together for us ideal. Aside from this there are also a lot of other things at which we do agree. One of these things is our passion for hardstyle.”

Between the Kenneth and Léon there’s a clear division of tasks. “We are both aware of each others qualities which is something we try to utilise as well as possible.” A small example: Léon is the hero of the sound design. Kenneth on the other hand is the man who wraps everything up to put the finishing touch on it. “On-stage we switch turns with tuning in our tracks to be played whereas Kenneth usually picks up the mic and Léon picks up his guitar whip up the crowd some more!”

When we ask the guys about the relatively high amount of duos in the hardstyle scene they are quite sure what the reason is for that. It might has to do with the fact that it is linked to a sense of certainty for your dj-career. “Together you’re usually stronger than working on your own which makes you more brave to engage in new things. In addition to that you’re also more capable to accomplish more. We truly complement each other perfectly which creates more opportunities for us as a duo rather than working separately on our own.”

Since Kenneth and Léon are opposites it frequently causes some disagreements between the two guys. Yet they believe that they can only benefit from this as it keeps them sharp. “Usually when we do not totally agree with each other we realise that the solution is not within reach, or it’s a sign that we should not start with the next step yet. That is usually the point where we start looking for something that we both agree on. If that’s not the case and either one of us really believes that his idea is the best we just go for it.” It’s a matter of giving and taking.

Kenneth and Léon see each for at least 100% as friends. “Our journey has started as a collective passion for music and it absolutely does not feel like work. We therefore believe that we cannot really call each other colleagues. Despite being good friends we really give ourselves space to have enough time for our private life. We both have a different group of friends yet in the end everyone knows each other which is again thanks to the small size of Nunspeet. It’s a just a cozy town.”

“IN MOST ASPECTS OF WORKING TOGETHER WE ARE PLUS AND MINUS, OPPOSITES YOU COULD SAY. THIS IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MAKES WORKING TOGETHER FOR US IDEAL.”

Their first performance in Chili is for Audiotricz probably one of their most memorable memories they have experienced so far. “The energy we received from the fans during our time on stage was simply indescribable. But in fact we cannot just mention one thing that we really consider to be our best memory. We have experienced already so much together!” What’s the thing they admire the most about each other? Sobriety!

We also asked them how they experienced the time since their release of their new live-act: NEXT CHAPTER. This is their own interpretation of a musical hardstyle sensation with new Audiotricz tracks and Léon playing on his guitar. Especially since they spent some time on the background preparing new stuff for this live-act. “Intense! We were both aware that something needed to happen around Audiotricz to lift our act to the next level. We managed to distinguish ourselves from other artists and acts by creating this live-act, our own next level.”

“At the start of this project we were thinking too difficult luckily our way of thinking eventually took a turn when Léon picked up his guitar for the upteenth time to just play around a little. This always seems to lift the mood which is a kind of vibe that we also try to present on the stage. We believe that by using this we can also present a sense of authenticity in our act.”

It also functioned as a new source of inspiration for Kenneth and Léon. “After we figured out what to do with the guitar we started searching the internet to whether our idea was truly ‘original’. We found out that there were already several djs who used special ways of making their act unique with the use of instruments and crazy visuals. This kickstarted our new way of thinking in terms of trial and error to we whether we could also do this in combination with hardstyle. We managed to find our own way of working and can’t wait to present this to our fans at Defqon.1!”

We do know that Léon is capable of playing the guitar properly yet we were also quite curious to Kenneth’s musical abilities. “I did have some keyboard lessons in the past but I lost the ability to play it however. I must say though that once we started our NEXT LEVEL project it has started to itch again. It could offer even more possibilities for our live-act.” Inspiration enough. “For the time being we still have a long way to go before our NEXT LEVEL is perfected. We would really like to take our concept all over the world, that would be amazing.”
