Hardstyle partners in crime: Clockartz
DJ duo’s, our scene has quite a few. What’s it like to be part of a dj duo? Is one the dj, the other the producer; how does this collaboration actually work? What are the advantages? And what is the down side? Do they see each other as friends or colleagues? Time to find out! In this new blog serie on Hardstyle Report, we’ll interview your favourite hardstyle duos. We’ll kick off with Clockartz!
“Ciao, we are Konnie and Seba!” Konstantin and Sebastian are two Italian boys, both 25 years old. Together they are Clockartz, a hardstyle duo from Italy. They started their career somewhere around 2010, but before that, they made jumpstyle and hardjump videos together on YouTube. In one of their endless YouTube streaks, they came across a hardstyle producing tutorial. And the rest is history.
“At that moment we had no idea that 9 years later, hardstyle would be such a big part of our lives. We were just producing for fun.” But they never stopped and improved their music day by day. After they sent some demos to various labels, they came into contact with a Dutch label and their current manager. “Since then, it has been rolling.” The first big Clockartz hit was ‘Rockafella’, in 2017. From that moment on, it went very fast for ‘Konnie and Seba’. They started performing at the biggest hardstyle parties and festivals. “Suddenly we got booked on the BLUE stage at Defqon.1!” Nowadays, they focus fulltime on making music. “We are in the studio everyday, trying to produce the Clockartz music as you know it and one thing is for sure: we won’t stop!”

Konstantin and Sebastian met when they were three years old, in kindergarten. That’s where the foundation was laid for their lifelong friendship. “From that moment on, we were inseparable.” Music has always played a major role in their lives and therefore in their friendship. "We have always had the same taste in music and went to parties together." In 2010 Sebastian was the one who took the lead and started producing, shortly after that Konstantin followed. "It was the most logical step to start making music together. Our connection has been so close for 22 years. There's nothing better than being able to do that together with your best friend."
Sebastian and Konnie are a very good team together. “We are both pretty down to earth and like to appreciate the little things in life.” Family and friendship also play a big role in the lives of the boys, something that makes their bond even stronger. Of course there are some differences, but they complement each other perfectly. For example, Seba is more turbulent. “He makes decisions quickly and is a bit more spontaneous.” Konstantin, on the other hand, is a bit calmer. “He reflects things better.” Of course they don't always agree with each other, but after a discussion they always end up on the same road together. “I think that's really the strength of Clockartz.”
They don't have a real division of roles. They do all the things that DJ’s and producers do. During a show they both do mixing and entertaining people. “Seba is the one with the microphone though”, adds Konstantin laughing. In the studio it's often Sebastian who starts with an idea. Konstantin works on these ideas and improves them. But it can also be the other way around. Each track is produced in a different way and is often very spontaneous.

When we ask the guys how it's possible that there are a lot of dj duos in the hardstyle scene, they explain that for them that's largely due to the family feeling within the scene. “When someone talks about hardstyle, you often hear the word ‘hardstyle family’. “Hardstyle is really about family and friendship and maybe that’s why many friends become duo’s and transform passion into business as a duo.”
Konstantin and Sebastian are very involved in each other’s lives and see each other almost every day. “In our free time we like to go cycling, swimming or going out with friends. Since the beginning of our friendship we do everything together.” Thanks to their success, they appreciate the friendship even more. “We are working together to create something beautiful, out of all those ideas from two different heads. We have so much fun together. In the studio, during our travels or sets. We are very proud that we can do this together.”

While Sebastian really appreciates his friend’s calmth, Konstantin especially likes the fact that he can really build on Seba. “He always keeps his word and is there for you when you need him.” They wouldn't want to change anything about each other, their friendship or their cooperation. When we ask for their favourite memory together, we get two very different answers, but it does emphasize their different character traits. Konnie tells us about their holiday in Thailand, in 2015, and Seba tells us about the moment they saw people crying at the BLUE internship at Defqon.1, “because they were so touched by our music”.
At the moment Konstantin and Sebastian are living in the Netherlands again, for the festival season, and they are very busy in the studio. “The last few months we didn't have much free time, but that means: good news for you! Loads of new music is set and done. You will definitely love it, that's for sure! We keep you posted!”
